Day 8, Aug 17 (Friday)

We found letterboxes today!! Both “On the Road” and “Big Ness Mess” were successfully found!

We took a bus to Craigmiller Castle, in a South Edinburgh suburb.  This was a lot of fun and really neat.
They have lots of road construction too!  Just like Constructionopolis back home.

This street sign was only obvious if you are sitting on the deck of a double decker bus.
Unlike Edinburgh, there weren’t very many people, the site isn’t improved, and we got to climb in, on, and around the ruins.  Took a lot of pictures of this one, which dated from the 1400’s through many modifications through the 1600’s.  Naturally we planted a letterbox nearby.
teens will be teens, the world round.

Craigmillar up closer.

respect the sign... bahahahahaha!

Someone's got inky fingers!

The approach to the castle... Pretty excited at this point.

Unicorns are a popular symbol with the Scots.  The unicorn was the only creature that could kill a lion, the symbol of England.

16th century bed chamber.  Note the size of the fireplace in relationship to the doorway.

Is that the thinker?  Or the stinker?

Took a bus back to Leith for lunch at Gladstone’s Pub, right on the river (called The Water of Leith).  Decided to keep taking it easy, with a nap at the hotel since we were nearby.  Very good break from the crowds.

Walked by this every day, I delighted that I could look up her nose.

waiting for me to get my act together.

We decided to go out for a few drinks at local watering holes in Leither instead of the very crowded Mile.  It was hard to explain an “Iron Butterfly” drink to the local bartender.  They didn’t really understand the idea of a multi-alcohol mixed drink because they are very expensive there, and pretty small and weak (see appendix).  Some drunk guy thought we were Austrian and “saluted” us with a heil that made no sense.  I think others in the bar were embarrassed for him.  Local Chinese takeout for dinner, which was very good; their cheap Chinese is different than our cheap Chinese.
